Singing Tips #1 – Drop Your Jaw When You Sing

This is a quick singing tip that can give you a pretty big improvement in a quick amount of time. You probably heard it before, but I bet no one really explained this technique to you in detail. So let me start by explaining what dropping your jaw is NOT.

Dropping your jaw is not simply lowering your chin. Yes, your chin will naturally lower when you drop your jaw but the two are completely separate things.

OK, want to see what dropping your jaw feels like? Just take your finger and place it at the end of your jaw line. It’s the place where your jaw line and the bottom of your ears meet. You should feel a small dip there.

Now begin to yawn. Notice how the dip will open up. And also notice how much more space there are in your mouth and in the back of your throat now. Now try and do this with your mouth close.

This is what dropping your jaw feels like. If you can learn to drop your jaw while singing, this one tip can be more beneficial and any other singing tips.

Singing Tips #2 – Learn To Control Your Breath

There are many singing tips out there on the internet but few emphasize the importance of have a steady control over your breathing. The skill of being able to let out a stead, sustained jet of air is a crucial skill for a singer to have. All the singing tips in the world won’t do you any good if you can’t sustain your breath when singing.

So, with that in mind, I want to give you a breathing exercise to help you develop your breath. I call it “The Bent Flame.”

Light a candle and hold it about 1 foot away from your face. Then draw in air and blow at the candle using a steady stream of air. Your goal here is to bend the flame without blowing the candle out. Try to sustain this for as long as you can.

You’ll notice that this requires a great deal of control on your part. Just keep practicing this singing tip and you’ll find that your singing will be much more smooth.

Singing Tips #3 – Plan Your Breath

This one is the last of the singing tips but by no mean is it the least. When learning to sing a song, most singer will just drive right into it. And this can be a fine approach but one problem is cause is that the singer might find him/herself in the middle of the note or verse without enough air to finish the phrase properly.

One easy way to fix this is by planing out when and where you are going to breath in during a song. Simply take out your lyric sheet and mark out all the places where there are pauses and stops. Then sing along to the lyrics and make a note of where you feel comfortable and where you might be low on breath. This will tell you when you need to breath in.

By planing out your song this way, you’ll have a much easier time singing it and it will sound a lot better too.

That concludes our 3 singing tips. Remember to do the exercises regular and make sure to check out the other articles on this site for more singing tips and breathing exercises for singing.
