Two Very Effective Breathing Exercises For Singing
Now that you’ve learn how to breath deeply, here’s 3 great breathing exercises for singing to improve your breath control.
Great singing happens when just the right amount of air meets the right amount of vocal cord vibration. Therefore an important skill for a singer to have is to be able to control the air that is in his/her lungs and release just the right amount in a constant and steady stream.
To help you develop this ability, here are 2 great breathing exercises for singing that will drastically improve your breath control if you do them regularly.
Breathing Exercises For Singing #1: The Slow Leak
The first breathing exercises for singing is called “The Slow Leak.” First take in a deep breath using your diaphragm, allowing your stomach to expand. Then part your lips slightly while keeping your teeth closed. Now release a small amount of air through your teeth until you hear a small leaking sound. The sound will be similar to when you pinch the opening of a balloon and let a small stream of air leak out.
Release just enough air so that you can hear the sound and try to keep the stream as steady and continuous as possible. Allow your stomach to gradually move in as you release the air. Keep going until you are completely out of air.
This exercise can be a little difficult so don’t worry if you don’t last every long at first. Just keep practicing this exercises 3 times a day until you can last for 30 seconds or longer.
Breathing Exercises For Singing#2: The Deep Inhale
The second breathing exercises for singing is called “The Deep Inhale.” To begin, gently exhale until your lungs are adequately emptied. Then breath in through your nose as slowly as you can while keeping a steady rate of inhale.
Once you’ve filled up your lungs all you can, hold your breath for 10 – 15 seconds. Then exhale.
Your goal is to get to a point where you can inhale for 45 seconds and then hold it for 15 seconds. Again this is a difficult exercise to do so don’t feel bad if you can’t last that long at first.
When doing this breathing exercises for singing, it’s important that you don’t tense up your body. Towards the end of your inhale, you might find that you neck tenses up as you try to “suck” in more air. Don’t do that.
If you can’t breath in anymore air without tensing your neck then that’s where you should stop. Your lungs capacity will naturally increase as time pass so don’t try to force it.
Also, as you are holding your breath, if you feel your neck or the muscles under your chin tensing, then roll your head in a circle (or whatever movement works for you) to try to keep your neck relaxed.
Remember, the key to this exercise’s effectiveness is the combination of the deep inhale AND the holding of your breath that forces you to engage (and over time – strengthen) the breathing muscles around your mid section. Just holding your breath alone will not do the trick.
You should do this exercises 3 times a day.
By doing these 2 breathing exercises for singing regularly, you will feel like you have a lot more power in your breath while singing and the vocal exercises that I’ll show you later on will be much easier to do. In fact, just by doing these breathing exercises for singing a few times, you should already be able to hear a difference in your voice when you sing.
